The UK government has instructed construction firms to use greener processes in their construction of new houses, passing legislation which sees firms encouraged to incorporate green technologies into the buildings, so that the building’s operations can have less of an impact on the environment.
Eco-friendly construction techniques
Three core principles have been identified and need to be implemented in order for the construction of a structure to be ecologically beneficial to the environment, including:
- Machines driven by hybrid engines and electric vehicles should be used to eliminate energy wastage during construction. The engaging of an electric engine will reduce the load of an overworked motor engine in this way.
- Buildings which have been completed should also eliminate any wastage in the energy generated.
- Establish whether materials have been locally sourced or if they’re renewed; if they’re not, can they be recycled in the future?
Insulation materials are often very expensive, so during and after the construction of roofing, recycled paper can be used as a very effective form of insulation. Additionally, timbers which are sourced from forest in the local area and managed sustainably can also be used, along with reclaimed wood as an alternative to chopping down trees for the wood utilised in the construction industry. All of this comes together to save on costs and on energy inputs and outputs.
Ecological structures and their design
Here are some examples of the many different ways through which energy-efficient and eco-friendly technologies can be incorporated into a proposed structure:
- During construction, is any energy being wasted? Fast becoming a cheaper alternative to the other domestic power sources, solar energy panels should be used to generate electricity for buildings and domestic use and to power boilers and other electrical equipment.
- Water filtration systems should be built into drainage systems so that water can be re-used after the safe treatment of biological waste, which in itself can then be recycled. Tap-water can also be supplement from the collection and storage of rainwater.
- Lasting twice as long as regular light bulbs, low-energy lighting accounts for a 100% saving.
The benefits of eco-friendly construction
If the design of a building incorporates the use of daylight, usage of more natural light can help reduce the costs associated with artificial lighting.
Once the building is undergoing construction, recyclable and long-lasting materials should be used, which would account for fewer new materials to be used and therefore helping reduce costs and helping to reduce energy consumption from sources such as crude oil.
The use of these materials and techniques in construction will ultimately slow down the climate change rate. The ultimate goal of the construction industry should be produce greener homes and buildings which are economically efficient and are conceptualised with a consideration of the environment in mind.
